Today you will discover and visit three important archeological sites buried by Vesuvius when it erupted in 79AD. The first of which will be Pompeii (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with a local expert English guide. Pompeii was made immortal by the violent eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. & walking through the streets you can imagine how it was to live in this great city in imperial times.
Then you’ll continue to Herculaneum which has undergone unique restoration and conservation, not seen since Pompeii was excavated. With the eruption of Vesuvius, Ercolano was covered by pyroclastic materials & mud 16 meters deep. This conserved the old city including its two story Domus, inside which elements of wood, marble, jewelry, and furnishings, in addition to organic findings which all helped reconstruct the ancient lifestyle of the town.
Lastly a visit to Oplontis, a nearby neighborhood of Pompeii, to see an imperial villa that belonged to the 2nd wife of Nero, Poppea Sabina. This sumptuous villa of hers is an excellent example of a villa, that was more so used as a luxury vacation villa, and it was destroyed by the eruption of 79AD.
